An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 5 RGN working within the primary care service at HMP Thameside. This is a full time permanent position and will involve shift work, including night shifts on a rotational basis. We would also welcome applications from RMN’s who have experience of working within a primary care setting.

HMP Thameside is a public sector, category C training prison holding approximately 1250 men aged 18 years upwards who are serving prison sentences. The prison was built approx. 6 years ago so is a modern prison boasting modern facilities.

The prison boasts a state of the art gym facility which can be accessed by staff free of charge. There is also a staff canteen. There are free staff parking facilities available at Isis and the prison is local to Plummeted and Woolwich Arsenal, so has close access to several bus routes and train stations.

The post holder will provide clinical input within primary care interventions to offenders and support to junior colleagues. The post holders will work within the team of multidisciplinary staff to assist & support senior staff to deliver a nurse-led integrated primary care services and develop a specialist practice-based clinical model within the prisons.

Services include primary care support to Reception, First Night Centers, long-term conditions management and enhanced diagnostic, assessment and treatment as part of the integrated service, as well as providing a range of quality services and interventions within a larger multi-disciplinary team.

The successful candidate/s will be qualified and experienced practitioners (although newly qualified nurses can be supported within this team) The Band 5 Primary Care nurse positions will be a first point of contact within healthcare and a source of advice to primary care colleagues within our multi-disciplinary team, prison staff, & offenders.

With excellent communication skills and a confident, competent presentation you will be responsible for ensuring excellent physical health care & well-being of offenders in the prison.

Job Requirements:

We are also looking for:-

  • Experience of working within secure & prison settings (desirable)
  • Working knowledge of current issues/agendas facing prison/offender healthcare
  • Experience of multi-professional collaboration including working in partnership with other statutory and voluntary organizations.

In addition to the above, experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team is essential. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and verbal. An ability to demonstrate an understanding of change management and new ways of working is also essential.

There will be opportunities to develop clinically in line with service demand.

We also offer a preceptorship programme to support newly qualified nurses

Primary Care settings within prison healthcare are busy and pressured environments. The successful post holders should therefore have developed an ability to work under pressured conditions and be able to support others to do the same. Knowledge of current National Prison Health Quality & Performance Indicators is essential.

The successful post holder will be required to undergo and pass all prison security requirements as well as all Oxleas employment requirements.
